Can a Chinese person use an identity card number instead of a passport number?

I am American and will be traveling with a Chinese person inside of China. I have an american passport number and the Chinese person has a Chinese identity card number. Can we use this site and buy tickets for 2 people traveling together, then for the American give the passport number, and for the Chinese person give the identity card number?

If you are referring to train or flight ticket, yes, it is ok. Actually, Chinese people have to use their ID cards/numbers to buy tickets.
