Personally, direct long-distance bus is the best way. You can take that at Nantong Bus Station to your destination in around 6 hours. Of course, there is also train service between.0

Thank you. I have been investigating as well as I can. I believe we will take the bus to Shanghai, meet up with some fellow travelers and take high speed rail to HF then.1

we decided that two uncomfortable but do-able hours on the bus Nantong to Shanghai, followed by 2.5 hours on the relatively comfortable fast train from Shanghai to HF sure beat 6-7 hours on the bus.1
