72 hour transit visa to china

i am flying from vancouver to tokyo and back home via shangai can i use the 72 hours exemption as we would like to spend 3 days in shanghai

Yes, you can do this as long as you have a confirmed ticket leaving from Shanghai airport within 72 hours.
