Hi, I had the same experience. Due to the new entry and exit administration law, you should apply for the Q1 type one. If you succeed, you will have a temporary resident permit which allows to stay more than 180 days in PRC. Your wife just needs to send you an invitation letter and then you can file your application to the embassy or consulate. The letter should include the following contents:
1. the applicant's personal info: name, gender and birth date
2. the applicant's details: why to visit RC, when to arrive, where to stay, how long you will stay, the relationship between you and and the inviter, and financial sources
3. the inviter's info: name, tel, address and signature

Besides, a copy of her ID card and your marriage certificate (both copy and original version).
