Don't worry! It is always so safe to visit the two pedestrians in GZ. At night, there are more people and then you'd better keep close attention to your pocket.
It is best to exchange Phil pesos to USD in your first. Then it would be very convenient to exhange USD to CNY at the banks. The most reliable bank for currency exchange is Bank of China, according to my experience.

How about subway? Take local subway line 3 at the airport to Jiahewanggang Station, where transfer to line 2 to get off at Gongyuanqian. Then get out from exit D and you can easily walk to Beijing Road.
