How bus fare is calculated for Octopus card in HK?

I am new to HK. How bus fare is calculated for Octopus card. Why is there no swiping maching at exit door ? Why only at entry door - While entering the bus itself, an amount of around 12 HKD fare got deducted. And i wanted to get down at next stop. In that case, 12 HKD for 1 stop is too expensive. The same distance if i travel by MTR train would have costed me 4.1 HKD

There is swiping machine at the exit door. No matter which place do you go, the fare is certain. Only some lines have swiping machines, but usually travelers seldom use.
For your situation, it is very common. If you thought taking mtr is much cheaper, it is suggested take the mtr. The city bus is not always the cheaper method for traveling.
