About:China Student Visa

Once you have your student visa, how long before your course starts are you allowed to enter China?

for example, if your course starts in february, and you get your X in december, are you allowed to enter in december and travel or settle in until your course starts?

No, if you mean X1 type (longer than 180 days study), a single entry Chinese visa is valid for 3 months, but it only has 30 days as duration of stay. That is to say, you must register with your school within 30 days after entry so that you can start the process to apply for the residence permit.
