For a Chinese citizen to leave for the United States do they need to show proof of being able to sustain themselves while abroad by showing $3,500.00 or more in the form of a travelers check to immigration officials?

Hi, I don't know which type you apply for. Chinese citizens can provide supporting documents during the application. Take B-1/B-2 for example, the applicants can provide income certificate, tax form, property ownership certificate and other documents to make the officer believe that you will support you trip and come back to PRC.
