About:Marriage Registration in China

Is marrying a Chinese national for the purposes of acquiring citizenship legal?

I know of someone who wanted to marry a Chinese lady, for the sole purpose of acquiring Chinese citizenship.
Is this legal, or even a recognised practice? And if not, what is the penalty if the person is caught attempting to do so?

No, it is very difficulet to get Chinese citizenship even if you get married with a Chinese and reside in China for many years. So this is not practical. You can only get regular visa but with longer duration of stay each time or a residence permit.
