Is it possible to switch from a L visa to a S2 WITHOUT leaving China?

My wife and I have lived in China for over two years. I have a job right now, she is in-between. We want to switch her to an S2 until her next work Z is can be processed.

Does she have to leave, or can this be done within the country? We are American.
