About:Chinese Embassies and Consulates

My wife and I wish to stay with some old friends in GuangZhou for 4 weeks. They have a Z Work Visa.

Will an S2 visa be OK even though they are not my family members? If so what should I put for under "private affairs"? Would "spending time with a close freind" be OK?

Yes, you are able to apply for S2 type for this visit. "spending time with a close freind" is ok but you should also provide an invitation letter from your friend as well as the inviter's passport and residence permit.
