road trip to erenhot

I am going to drive to Erenhot from Beijing for visa issues. On the way, I want to go to a desert area and a grassland area and stay in a yurt. Do you have any suggestions that are not too far out of the way.

For grassland, you don't need to drive for it on purpose, you will must pass through it when driving for Erenhot from Beijing. You can stay one night in a yurt if you like on the way.
There is a desert area not far from Erenhot. You can visit it upon arriving.
