Length of time it takes to approve Visa application.

Hi,
Do you know how long it takes to approve an application. I have an Irish passport and I will be travelling to China for 3 weeks.
Also I am planning on visiting Hong Kong and taking a day trip to Macau,then back to Hong kong and then on to another Chinese city which I will fly out from. Do I need a double entry or more if I am doing this?
