About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Will I need to apply for a transit visa as it's not a flight-flight route but flight-train?

I'm a British citizen and as I can't apply for a Russian tourist visa in Beijing, I was thinking of going to Hong Kong and applying there, then I would fly to Beijing the day before my train ride.

Yes, you need to apply for the G type one since you don't do flight to flight trip.
