Transit visa required in advance? British/Australian/Maltese citizens

Hi, I am a UK passport holder and my wife holds both a Maltese and Australian passport. We have a 40 hour transit through Beijing airport and would like the opportunity to leave the airport and explore the city. Under current regulations, please could you advise whether we would both be granted 72 hours free transit on arrival, or do we need to apply in advance of travel? Many thanks

You both can enjoy 72 hour free transit if your stopover is less than 72 hours in BJ. But make sure inform your airline in advance about this free transit request, so that you will be granted the transit permit upon arrival.
