About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour Visa-free transit

I will be travelling from Tokyo to London via Shanghai with a 22 hour stop off time. I would like to leave the airport for this time, stay in a central hotel and see the city and culture. Does this 72 hour free transit allow me to physically leave the airport and come back for the second part of my flight? and if so do I need to do anything in advance?

Yes, sure you can benefit from this free transit policy this time. You need to inform your airline before boarding the plane to Shanghai, basically fill a form with your information. Then the airline will email your information to the Shanghai airport in advance. It is easy and a free transit permit will be granted upon arrival.
