Felicia Official language is Mandarin (foreigners call it), natives call Hanyu or putonghua.
It characters are called radicals. There are thousands of characters. But in 1970's the Chinese government has introduced simplified Chinese to increase literacy and ease of learning even for foreigners. To speak Chinese fluently you have to learn 2000 characters (In English you have to learn 10000). Don't worry about the characters if you are planning to learn. Even if you are able to recognize the characters that is enough (you don't have to learn to write them as you will never write with a pen or brush, you will type on your computer, tablet or phone).
