About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use this 72 hour period to apply a new visa (current one expires the day I fly to Guangzhou)

On the day my work Z expires, I am flying from Shanghai to Guangzhou (to stay for 1 week)
Will I be able to use this 72 hour free period to stay in Guangzhou and apply for a new one, or will my only option be to travel down to Hong Kong and apply for it there?
(I have an Australia passport)

May I know if you mean your work residence permit expires soon? if yes, you have to leave before the expiry date. A domestic flight from Shanghai to Guangzhou does not apply to the 72 hour free transit policy, so it is impossible to get one there. Please try to do it in HK if you do not want to go back to Australia.
