How to buy subway tickets in Xian?

Hi,
I understand from this site that subway and most buses are self-services (are buses within the main city area self-service?). So there are some vending machines for which you can buy your tickets from. Do these machines have english description of the destination or should I know the chinese character for the destination when using these machines? Thanks in advance.
