About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

What type entry to China should I apply for? single, multiple, etc.

I will be there on a Uniworld tour for no more than 19 days with the last few days in Hong Kong before flying to Tokyo and then back to US. What kind of entry should I apply for on a tourist L to cover all situations, including unexpected problems?

A single entry tourist L is enough if you will travel domestically in mainland before leaving for HK(you are allowed free entry to HK for 90 days).
