Possible to trekking the Great Wall without a guide? and Route Suggestion?

I wish to avoid Badaling altogether and perhaps start at Jinshanling or Mutianyu. How do I do this without a guide. Can you suggest a moderate route of about 2-3 hours with great scenary?

In my opinion, it is suggested to go to Jinshanling directly and you can travel to that place on your own.
From Dongzhimen Long Distance Bus Station, you can find direct buses to reach Jishanling directly on weekends on holidays. The buses leave at around 07:30.
After you travel, the back bus at around 14:30 will take you back.
