Expired Z visa

Hi everyone,

I have an expired Z type. I want to return home to America. People have told me as long as I have a paid airline ticket, I can show up at the airport and they will allow me to leave. Other people have told me I must pay a fine before I will be allowed to fly. Can someone please give me a clear answer on this problem? Thank you all for your time.

How long have you been overstayed? According to the law, foreigners who reside in China illegally will be warned. If serious, they will be fined for 500 RMB per day, with a cap of 10000 RMB in total or be detained for not less than five days but not more than 15 days.
