Is arriving by Cruise Ship exempt from the Visa Requirement?

I am arriving by cruise ship to the Shanghai port and will leave Pudong airport the following day. I am a U.S. citizen with a flight non-stop to Los Angeles.

No, you have to apply for a Chinese visa in advance, the exemption is for air passengers only.
