It got the name because the river is in yellow-ochre color due to a large amount of sand when it flows through the Loess Plateau.

Wright, it turns yellow because the earth of the loess plateau is taken into the river by the rainfall. Long time ago, the ecological environment on the loess plateau was very good. Because of human activities and climate changes, the plateau is eroded. Sand and earth were brought into the river. As a result, the river turned yellow.

Originating in the Bayankala Mountains in Qinghai province in western China, it flows through 9 provinces of China and empties into the Bohai Sea. It is called the Yellow River because huge amounts of loess sediment turn the water that color.
