About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

LAX to Malaysia/Malaysia, Shanghai, LAX

I hold a US passport. And, am planning on flying from Los Angeles to Malaysia and staying there for about 3 weeks. Then for the return trip (Kuala Lumpur to Shanghai to Los Angeles), I would like to stay in Shanghai for 2 or 3 days. Will I qualify for the visa free policy with my roundtrip tickets, LAX-KUL / KUL-Shanghai-LAX?
