For ancient students, Four Books and Five Classics are the major subject they learn.
For them, reciting is the major method for them to learn and then the teachers will explain the meaning of the sentence to the students.
They learn them and want to be officials in the government.
The aim for the ancient learning is to teach students how to be a good man and how to handle relationship with other people. It also taught students how to make friend with the environment.

As far as I know, the ancient Chinese education could teach students how to be a good person, but they provided less knowledge for the students.
