About:Shanghai Grand Theater

What happened to import foreign musicals at Shanghai Grand Theatre?

I remember watching Hairspray, The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia - - - but lately there doesn't seem to be anything new coming along. What gives?

Yeah, I find that too. It is a little strange, but one of my Chinese friends told me the theatre never stops import foreign musicals. I am a little confused.

My wife is in China's production of Mamma Mia and they have a 5 year license to do the local version in local language and are now in the 3rd season. See www.sueshen.com/news A couple of Songs are sung in English but even in Chinese, it works very well and after seeing 12 performances over last 2 years I can say I enjoy the production. They also have the license for Cats. I would say 'watch this space' as more musicals are done in local language by local performers.

I suppose that's okay for Chinese and those that speak the language. And since your wife is in a production, you would enjoy all that much more. But I wasn't asking about things that have been done over and over (and in another language!), but rather other, newer touring shows from around the world, that have perhaps left Broadway (or even perhaps not!). Maybe there is just too much red tape to get through in order to mount a production here.
