American and Jordanian visiting China for tourism?

I am writing to inquire about a Jordanian and American visiting for tourism. We live and work in Amman. I see it is only 10JOD for Jordanians to apply and 140US$ for Americans! Why so much? Also, I understand we need an "invitation?" Is this necessary? Thanks for your support. Have a wonderful day.

Hi, the fee is charged according to the reciprocal agreements. US passport holders need to pay USD 140 or money equivalent no matter which country you apply for it. For tourism, invitation letter is not mandatory, you can provide round-trip ticket and hotel booking instead.
