About:Telephone & Cellphone in China

Can I just use a Chinese SIM card in my Smart Phone from the US or do i ahve to buy a new phone?

I will be based (8 weeks) in Jingdezhen but will also be in Shanghai for some time, then off to Taiwan for a few more weeks.

No, you don't need to buy a new phone. The SIM card can be used in your mobile.
