About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Changing airport in Shanghai

I'm a US citizen and I'm flying from US-Shanghai-Taiwan.

I'll be arriving in Pu Dong international from US however, my next flight is departing from Hongqiao international to Taiwan. I only have 6 hours of travel time in between my 2 flights. Do I still need to go to the police office and apply for the travel permit?

If I will need a travel permit, is that something I can apply in the US beforehand? I'm a bit worry about not having enough time to commute in between the airports and still have to stop by the police office.

Don't worry, it is not necessry to go to any police station if you transit with 6 hour stopover only in Shanghai. You can easily get a stay permit after arriving in Pudong airport for you to catch your flight in Hongqiao Airport.

Where do I go about getting a stay permit in the airport? Is it different from a travel permit?

It is easy to get in the airport from the Entry Frontier Office with passport and ticket/boarding pass. The stay permit is issued to transit passengers if necessry, which is different from travel permit.
