Anything different when applying for a second work visa after first one expired?

I am finishing one contract, then will go home for in July and start a new job back in China in September. My first work one will expire. Should I just be applying for a new one in my home country?

Do I need the release letter from the first company? Is there anything different when applying for a second one, if the other one has just recently expired?
