Heard you can get visa on train from UB to Khohot

Hi, I'm an American living in Russia. I'm a member of an Orchestra here, and we are planning a trip to Mongolia then China. My director tells me that we can get one on the train from UB to Hohot but that doesn't sound exactly right to me. Anyone have any experience with this?
