What is the maximum time period can i apply for the residence permit for foreigners?

I currently have residence permit for foreigner in the PRC which will expire end of this month, im married to a mainland chinese and have our marriage was authenticated in the Chinese embassy where we were living in overseas. My two kids are currently studying here and i have been stayin here taking care of them. Will i be able to apply for a residence permit which last 5 yrs? Anyway would like your help as my current permit will expire end of may. Thanks!
