To my experience, it may not be that easy to live there alone if you don't speak Chinese. Transportation may be convenient to take and most of signs are marked both in Chinese and English. But for shopping and dining, you have to ovecome some difficulties. Anyway, when you have any problems, fel free to turn to people around, especially the yong people, who may speak English and help you out.
But I'm afraid there are few taxi drivers speaking English.

Now I can understand circumstances. Please advise if I want to get internet services at my apartment (wifi or whatever) how much does it cost - if you can give a general idea about per month charges etc will be of much help. Thanks again.

I live in the city and I used the 4M network of China Telecom and it costs me about 80RMB per month.
After you get a network, then you can buy a wireless router to get wifi if you want to use wifi in the house.
