Changing Visas

Hi! I am moving to work in Guangzhou in April for 15 months. My boyfriend will follow in May and will look for work and/or study Mandarin. We have the following questions:

1. Can he change a tourist L into a work Z or X visa while in China or does he have to leave the country and come back?

2. He will apply for a tourist L but will only have a one way ticket into China and no invitation letter from a travel group since he will be staying with me. Can he still apply for a tourist L with that information?

3. What other documents can we provide the consular office here in Los Angeles so that they will grant him a tourist L?

Thank you!

Changing visa within China is possible, he can also use agencies if necessary, or get it done in HK.
For the second and third questions, I have to say the correct type for him is L but not simply for tourism. Becuase if you will work in China, you can send him an invitation letter, with copies of your visa, work permit and residence permit for his L application. Then, a single trip ticket may be acceptable.
