Can I apply for Chinese visa when outside the UK?

I am a UK citizen but am leaving the Uk in May 2013 to go travelling and intend to reach China in about July August time from Indonesia

Honestly, I am not sure that you can get it successfully in Indonesia. According to the requirements, non-Indonesians have to provide their KITAS (permanent residence in Indonesia). I guess you don't have it. I think you should confirm with the Chinese embassy in Indonesia and see if you can submit your application there. If not, better apply for it in the UK.
