Flying from Bangkok to Perth with stop over in Guangzhou for 24 hours

We are flying from Bangkok to go back home to Perth but have a stop over of 24 hours in Guangzhou, can we leave the airport for some sight seeing? with or without a visa? Thanks

Hi, I heard that visa is not required for a transit less than 24 hours. But when I called Pullmann hotel at Guangzhou Airport, they said I need a visa. So, to be safe, you are suggested to get a transit visa in advance.
