About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

UK - Shanghai - Hongkong, will it qualify for 3-day VISA-free entry to Shanghai?

Hi, I am a UK resident. Want to visit Hongkong but stop-over at Shanghai beforehand. The rules says the next stop cannot be in the same country or region. Does Hongkong count as a different region to Shanghai? (Hongkong is a Special Administration Region and does not require a VISA for up to 180 days stay.)

Yes, Hong Kong is counted as the third region to Shanghai. You qualify for this 3 day visa exemption.

I went London - Shanghai - Hong Kong - London on Cathay Pacific. Should have been ok, except the London to Shanghai journey included a quick plane change in HK (it's the Cathay hub) - which means seperate boarding pass.

The immigration guy at Pudong airport looked at my incoming boarding pass (HKG-Pudong) and my onward journey (Pudong - HKG) and said NO!! as it wasn't officially a transit visit. Even though on my Opodo ticket the first leg was London - Shanghai.
There was much waiting and being dragged around the airport by officials who were scared to make a decision - it was infuriating.

In the end I managed to get a company I was visiting to arrange an official invitation by fax, pay for a visa, and they finally let me through (another huge performance with company seals demonstrating more than 5,000,000 RMB capitalisation).

Cathay staff at Pudong couldn't help at all except arrange to get me on the next flight back to HK if I wasn't able to get a visa.

It's all about the boarding pass you arrive on, and the outbound flight destination.
