Yunnan in April

Hi there,
I am planning to travel to Yunnan from Thailand/Laos in April. And have a few questions:

1. How long would it take roughly to travel from Bangkok to Kunming overland (i.e. via buses and trains) - what's the best route?

2. I also plan to visit YuanYang for the rice terraces. Is there a route from Laos to YuanYang without having to travel to Kunming first?

3. I plan to visit hilltribes/ethnic minorities of the region. Could anyone suggest an area which would be best to find an abundance of these groups? i hear of Guizhou...but any in Yunnan?

4. How is the weather in April generally?

5. Is there a good overland route to Hong Kong?

Thank you in advance! from the UK

Currently, you have to take flight from Bangkok to Kunming. No other better methods.
It is possible to go to Yuanyang without going to Kunming first, but you need to go to Jinghong first and then transfer for three times to reach Yuanyang. It is not suggested to do so, because transfering may be difficult for you.
Just in Yuanyang, you can see some ethnic minority village such as village of Hani people.
The weather is fine in April and it is the spring time then.
If you want to start your journey from HK by land, you can choose this route: HK-Shenzhen-Guangzhou-Kunming. Then you can take buses for whatever you want to go there.
