Is it a must to present an Invitation Letter for Chinese Tourist Visa

Is it a must to present an Invitation Letter for Tourist in order to get the Chinese Tourist Visa
As already I have a Sealed & Signed Original Invitation Letter for tourist but it will be expired within 1 week (Date of 1st Entry) whereas I am willing to travel after 1 Month
