i will be visiting a friend in shanghai in march. i have been to china many times but was told the application procedure has changed. if i am staying with my friend what documentation do i need and can i apply myself or do i need to find a travel agent to apply for me?

You need an invitation letter from your friend if you will stay in her/his place, as well as copies of inviter's passport, valid visa and residence permit (or copy of ID if Chinese). You need to apply through a travel agency in Japan.
