What documentation is required for tourist visa if i am staying with my friend in Shanghai?

i will be visiting a friend in shanghai in march. i have been to china many times but was told the application procedure has changed. if i am staying with my friend what documentation do i need and can i apply myself or do i need to find a travel agent to apply for me?
