About:China Train

I am flying into Beijing this August and traveling South by rail

and eventually across to Vietnam by land - will this be an issue when applying for a visa as I don't have an exit flight?

I think you need to apply for visa. You had better check with your local embassy.

You can apply for a visa in Kunming (near the border), Beijing or at home! I did the same and applied in kunming! I dont think no exit flight is a problem but i cant be 100% sure...
