If there is really an extra place at the table, it should happen during Chinese New Year. Chinese usually set an extra place for the one who cannot go back home, by which the family reaches a reunion in form.

After the New Year Eve reunion dinner, people usually open the door to welcome the good luck come to their home smoothly.
