You can enter China with your valid residence permit, then apply for a residence permit extension within China.

I am not sure if your current residence permit was based on an X visa to China? and may I know how long will you stay in China for this internship? if it is less than 6 months, you need to apply an F visa directly.

It was based on an F. I will stay for exactly 6 month for the internship (but planning to travel around China afterwards).
Is it also possible to apply for an F when I arrive in China? So I will enter China with my valid Residence Permit and then apply for an F?
THANKS so far!

You can enter first with your residence permit and then apply for an F extension within China. It is possible and you can also entrust an agency if necessary.
