Hi, your son need to write an invitation for you. The letter should contain your information (i.e. full name, gender, date of birth, purpose of visit, date of arriving and leaving China, place of visit, relations between you and the inviter, financial support during stay in China) and information of the inviter (i.e. name, contact number, address and signature). Copies of his passport, legal permit and visa in China are also required.

Hello I don't think the other response is correct.

I have just applied for a tourist visa for China at London. And it is far more difficult than usual. (8 Feb 2013). Information I found on the visa for China site has NOT BEEN UPDATED YET. It is inaccurate.

1) I assume your son is British? So he cannot issue an invitation letter.
2) You need an ID card from a Chinese citizen - a clear copy of BOTH SIDES OF IT AND THE SAME PERSON must give the invitation letter.

OR...

You need a copy of a return ticket AND PROOF of accommodation e.g. I used the ORIGINAL hotel booking copy.
I suggest you call the visa centre before to check this, and remember that information on the website may not be updated yet.
