Change from Z to L visa within China for two months

At the end of June our working contracts and Z visas expire but we wish to remain in China for two more months to travel before leaving. Our place of work will arrange an extension of our Z for 30 days. Following this we have friends who will sponsor us as tourists so will provide us with the necessary letter. My question is can we do this application for the L visa in China (Shanghai) or must we leave and apply from outside? Many thanks. I have asked on this F & A page before but I seem to be getting conflicting opinions on this and do not want to get caught out doing the wrong thing when it is too late!We do however really want to stay here for those two extra months beyond end of June.

You can do this in Shanghai with required documents. If your company will help with extension for one more month on Z, it will be perfect, and you can do a conversion to L before it expires at local PSB.

Many thanks for the helpful advice.What exactly do I need other than the letter,passport,police residence signed forms.Can I continue using my current residence as an address or that of our sponsor?

Prepare 2 Passprot Photographs, and you need 1 more letter from your employer to confirm you have already quit (with company official stamp, quit date on the letter must be a recently date within a month).
Current residence as address is ok, or you can explain your travel purpose to the officer, and provide your sponsor's address instead if you will stay with him/her.

Thankyou so much,this is such a help to have this advice.One more question,the date from work can it be say 30th June when my contract ends or should it be 31st July when the extension is up?
Also how many times can you extend a tourist visa ?

If your company will extend your z for one month, it should be 31st July. As I know, the PSB provides service to convert Z to L for one month only.
