what is an invitation letter for tourist?

We are going to Shnghai 4 days on April 2013, I asked tourist Co to write an invitation letter but they said they can not.  We are also visiting my friend's daughter, who is student of one of University in Shanghai.  Can she write an invitation letter?  Where can I get a sample of invitation letter?

Hi, she can write an invitation letter for application, but if you are visiting mainly for tourism, just apply tourist L visa with hotel bookings and a round-trip ticket.
