About:Chinese Embassy in U.K.

I went to Hong Kong last year and did a day trip to Macau.Is this classed as having visited China?

No, both HK and Macao are Special Administration Regions of China. They have different visa policies from mainland China. So, you can apply as the first time visitor if you plan to visit mainland China this time.
