About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

Travel Manchester-New Zealand via Guangzhou 20 hours stop do I need a visa as I want to go down town

I would like to know if I need a visa for a 20 hour visit while in transit to New Zealand as I would like to go out of the airport and in to the town at Guangzhou ?

I think you need a visa for that, but you may also apply for a 24-hour stay permit on your arrival at the frontier inspection station of the airport.
