12 month multi entry tourist (L) visa for China

Hello, I have been in China as a tourist since October 2012 and my 90 day tourist visa will expire soon.
I have heard that I can apply for a 12 month multi entry tourist (L) visa in Bangkok if I show that I have already used a tourist visa in the past.
Is this correct? I'm Australian and applied for my original tourist visa in Australia (Brisbane).

What I've heard is that temporary visitors are not able to get a China visa in Bangkok. Even those aliens who are working or living in Bangkok are only able to get a single entry China tourist visa.

It's possible, but more likely that you'll meet with success in Chiang Mai. However, I'm pretty sure only 30 day L visas are being issued either in Chiang Mai or Bangkok. You're better off sending your passport to a visa agent or a friend/relative in Australia to get you a new 12-month L visa from there, while you wait in Thailand (do NOT do this while you are waiting in China as it would be found out and illegal).
